The Guardians of the Earth project continues to grow as a powerful global movement connecting young students to environmental action—and in Sierra Leone’s Southern Region, the impact has been truly inspiring.

Led regionally by Andrew Squire and under the national coordination of Hon. Emissary Dr. Carlos Richard Sankoh, seven schools across Moyamba, Bo, and Bonthe Districts enthusiastically participated in this meaningful initiative.

From tree planting and environmental clean-ups to creative drawings reflecting their communities, students embraced every phase of the project with excitement, pride, and a sense of responsibility to protect their planet.

Participating Activities & Highlights

Environmental Drawings – Students began by illustrating local landscapes and environmental challenges, using their creativity to highlight the beauty of their ecosystems and the importance of preservation.

Tree Planting – Pupils across participating schools planted trees on their campuses and in surrounding areas, learning firsthand the importance of reforestation and green spaces.

School Clean-Ups – The students also engaged in cleaning their school environments, promoting cleanliness, and learning proper waste disposal practices.

Throughout the project, students, parents, and teachers expressed their joy and appreciation for being part of a global effort—and emphasized their eagerness to continue.

“Our students are ready and willing to continue working with the organization. This has been a new beginning for environmental action in our communities.”— Andrew Squire, Regional Coordinator

Despite the Challenges, the Mission Continues

As with many grassroots initiatives, the road hasn’t been easy. The team faced significant challenges, including:

  • Lack of mobility for coordinators across remote areas

  • No tablets or computers for digital drawing

  • Limited access to materials like art supplies and tools

Yet, in spite of these limitations, the students showed remarkable resilience and passion. Their participation reminds us that environmental education and creativity must be accessible to all—especially those in under-resourced communities.

Let’s Support These Young Environmental Leaders

We are asking our community and partners to help keep this momentum alive.
