As the Sustainable Consumption Workshop 2026: Integrating Human Rights and Climate Action, organized by WorldEd Foundation, comes to a close, we continue to celebrate the remarkable achievements of young changemakers across the globe.
Among them, Team Wise-Bite has been recognized as 3rd Place Winners – Sustainability Champions for their impactful and community-driven approach to tackling food waste.
A Simple Question, A Powerful Movement
Led by Basmalla Mahfouz and Karma Abu Samra, Team Wise-Bite began their journey with a simple but powerful question:
Why is so much food wasted when millions of people still struggle to eat?
Their research revealed the scale of the issue:
Around one-third of all food produced globally is wasted
Food waste contributes up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions
A significant portion of waste happens at the household level
But beyond the statistics, they identified a deeper issue—a lack of awareness and understanding, even among adults.
Building Awareness from the Ground Up
Rather than focusing only on systems, Team Wise-Bite focused on people—especially children. Their belief was simple: If young minds understand the value of food early, long-term change becomes possible.
Their solution combined education, engagement, and real-world action:
Awareness Through Education
Created interactive games and storytelling activities to teach children about food waste
Helped students understand the environmental and social impact of their choices
Engagement and Behavior Change
Introduced a class promise chart, with 90–95% student participation
Encouraged students to finish their meals and share leftovers responsibly
Social Media & Community Action
Launched an online challenge where students shared before-and-after photos of their meals
Promoted creative ways to reuse leftovers
Used social media to expand their message beyond the classroom
Real-World Insights
Conducted interviews with students and a local hotel to understand food waste behaviors
Discovered that over-serving and overestimating portions are key contributors to waste
Measurable Impact
The results of Team Wise-Bite’s project were both immediate and inspiring:
100% awareness and engagement among students interviewed
90%+ participation in pledge and activity-based learning
Demonstrated behavioral change through food challenges and student actions
Their project showed that when awareness is paired with engagement, real change follows.
A Message That Matters
At the heart of their project is a message that resonates globally:
“Think with your brain, not just your belly.”
It’s a reminder that every choice we make—no matter how small—has an impact on our planet and on others.
Celebrating Youth Leadership
Team Wise-Bite’s recognition as Sustainability Champions highlights the power of youth-led solutions that are creative, inclusive, and impactful.
Their work demonstrates that meaningful change doesn’t always begin with large-scale systems—it can start with one lesson, one conversation, and one mindful decision.
As we celebrate their achievement, we are reminded that the future of sustainability is already in capable hands.
